How to Use Solar Energy in Your Home

If you are looking for ways to save money at home, it is possible to use the power of the sun in order to generate electricity. While the idea once sounded a bit sci-fi to the general public, more homes and commercial businesses are beginning to embrace the solar energy craze. Of course utilizing this type of energy is most useful when in a climate with direct sunlight for most of the year, although it is still possible to use solar power in most of the country. There are different techniques available for using solar power, and you don’t need to just install large solar arrays in order to use the energy.

Using Solar Power at Home

Yes, there is of course the option to install solar arrays on your roof or yard in order to generate electricity. You can probably generate enough to power your entire home, all while selling the remainder back to the electric company. However, installing this equipment is extremely expensive, which you might not be able to afford. Plus, it is going to take many years to make back the money you put into the equipment. However, when you look at it as a long term investment, solar panels for homeowners do make sense in the grand scheme of things. It’s not only an economical decision, but an environmental one as well.

Solar Pool Heaters

If you have a pool, there are solar pool heaters that you place over the water of the pool. The heater absorbs the heat from the sun and is able to generate heat for the pool. This saves a considerable amount of money over going out and buying a heater for the pool, which is going to cost you hundreds of dollars just to use, each and every year.

Solar Water Heaters

To cut down on your home electric or gas bill, you can purchase and install a solar hot water heater. With this equipment, you can use the sun to heat up all the water you use in the house, including your showers. Individuals save around 85 percent on their monthly utility bill, when this is installed, which is a substantial savings. This is a good way to introduce yourself to solar power, before going all out and having the solar array panels installed.

Small Electronic Solar Panels

If you don’t have a large amount of money, but still want to find ways to use solar energy, there are small solar charger kits available that you can use with mobile devices, such as a laptop or phone. This is a good way to get introduced to the whole solar power idea. In fact, when you were a kid you likely played around with your calculator by covering up the little panel and watching the numbers fade – this was likely your first experience with solar power and you may not have even realized it!

The solar equipment absorbs the sunlight, converting it to power with your hardware. This is going to save you money over plugging and charging up the equipment at home. You can see a reduction in most of your monthly electric bills, just by using the solar equipment instead of the built in electrical outlets of your home.

There are also newer plug-and-play residential solar kits available at stores like Costco that are quite affordable and totally expandable as resources permit. The neat part is that they take the expensive installation portion out of the equation, since they can be quite easily installed by the homeowner.

Great overview on solar options for the home and agree with your sentence that it is an economical decision as well as an environmental one. A lot of states and cities can get subsidies to help reduce the cost as well but every state is different. There are also some solar trailers and generators that may help dodge any building permit issues or solve portability issues for some people.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Robert. The subsidies are something that a lot of people aren’t aware of.
